Across the bay from San Francisco sits Oakland, a city not as well-explored by area visitors. It is a city with a rich history and many hidden treasures. During World War II many African Americans came to work in Oakland's naval dockyards and stayed on to live. With its neighbor, Berkeley to the north, Oakland has been a proud catalyst for social change. The Black Panther Party was formed here in 1966 to protect residents against police excesses.
